INTRODUCTION

Kargil District carved out of the erstwhile District Ladakh came into existence in July, 1979. The District lies in the north-east of Kashmir Valley at a distance of 205 Kms, from Srinagar. It has a geographical area of 14036 sq.Kms. The whole area is of the high rocky mountains which is devoid of natural vegetation. Density of population is only 8 against average of 59 persons per sq.Km at the state level. The District has the high altitude area in the country with alttitude ranging from 8000 feet to 18000 feet above the sea level.
